Ministry wants 10% rise in GDP from patents

Malaysia’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Technology has set a minimum 10 per cent increase to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from patented inventions and innovations this year.

Dr. Maximus Ongkili told a press conference that his ministry had set the 10 per cent increase as part of its Key Performance Indicators (KPI).

“Compared to the previous year, the ministry expects an increase of 10 per cent contribution to GDP when it comes to patented products this year,” he said.

Malaysia is introducing Innovative Year 2010 which will see cooperation from 14 other ministries to build public awareness of the importance of innovation.

Maximus said, “With Malaysia Innovative Year 2010, I hope we will be able to maintain our position or better still, improve ourselves and get better ranking [in global patents] this year.”

Maximus also said that he hoped that the launch of the National Innovation Centre for Excellence in June, would aid in more patents being registered by Malaysian inventor
