Malaysia to start small nuclear power progamme

July 7, 2009 by: editor

The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry says that Malaysia’s nuclear power programme will start with a small nuclear power plant before larger and more economic plants are built.

Deputy minister Fadillah Yusof told reports that “even though nuclear technology is not indigenous to Malaysia, the necessary capabilities can be developed, just as how the country once became the world’s leading producer of rubber and palm oil even though these commodities were not indigenous our country.”

Last month Prime Minister Razak Najib said Malaysia would emulate South Korea in developing a small-scale nuclear reactor for power generation.
