Tourism Malaysian is to focus on the UNESCO World Heritage status of areas such as Penang and Malacca to attract more foreigners to take part in the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme.

“Dilapidated houses in George Town and Malacca have great potential as second homes and MM2H participants can restore these properties to their former glory,” Tourism Malaysian director Datuk Kee Phaik Cheen told reporters.

“The value of UNESCO heritage listing is something we intend to push by promoting inner city living and enjoying our culture while using the restoration of dilapidated buildings as a hobby and investment to MM2H participants,” the director added.

Tourism Malaysia says this is likely to be of particular interest to Australian and European investors.

Penang and Malacca gained World Heritage status last year.
