Malaysia is ranked 18th in world competitiveness according to the annual World Competitiveness Yearbook.

It has risen one place this year, overtaking Ireland which has dropped to 19th place.

Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Datuk Mustapa Mohamed, said in a statement, “The challenge this year is to ensure our position can be sustained next year, if not improved so this will give encouragement to MITI and all government ministries to improve further our ranking.”

However, in terms of economic performance, Malaysia has dropped one position to ninth due to the global economic climate. Malaysia’s ranking on infrastructure also fell one place. Mustapa said, “there is a need to improve infrastructure to drive higher growth in the economy and to develop green technology for future sustainability.”
