Jean Todt, the former head of Ferrari’s Formula 1 racing team has been appointed as an “ambassador” for Malaysian tourism.

Todt, who is engaged to Malaysian born actress Michelle Yeoh, is a frequent visitor to the country and has a home in Malaysia under the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen told reporters that Todt mixes in influential circles and will help to raise Malaysia’s profile.

Malaysia is likely to receive fewer tourists this year due to the global economic slowdown. About 20 million foreign visitors are expected this year, down from 22 million in 2008.
