US visitors show keen interest in Malaysian wildlife tourism
American tourists are expressing growing interest in visiting Malaysia to see its wildlife, especially Orang Utans, says Mohamad Taid, vice president of Tourism Malaysia in New York. Wildlife tourism is a growing aspect, he said at the New York Times Travel Show currently being held in the city. He added that Malaysia was increasingly seen as a destination for eco and adventure tourism as well as for great beaches.

Malaysia targets high spending HK tourists
Tourism Malaysia is strongly targeting high spending, upmarket tourists from Hong Kong with a number of promotional campaigns. “The average Hong Kong tourist thinks of food, golf, diving and shopping when they think about any destination. Malaysia offers all of these attributes,” says Zaliha Zainuddin, Tourism Malaysia’s Hong Kong-based director. Connections between Hong Kong and Malaysia have been increased with a number of airlines including Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia and Cathay Pacific laying on extra flights.

Indian and Malaysian universities discuss cooperation

Iskandar in deal with Marlborough College
One of Britain’s leading public schools, Marlborough College, has signed a deal with Iskandar Investment Berhad to set up Marlborough College Malaysia. Malaysia sixth in Asia for corporate social responsibility
Malaysia is sixth among the top 10 Asian countries that are focusing on corporate social responsibility (CSR) according to a survey carried out by CSR Asia. Australia was in first place followed by China and Hong Kong. Malaysia’s first Harvard scholar takes up place
The first Malaysian to be awarded a scholarship by the University of Harvard in the US, Tunku Dr Sharifah Elizah Cornelia Jamalullail, 29, is undertake a study in psychiatry. The scholarship, under the auspices of The Mahadevan Fellowship, enables Dr Sharifah Elizah to continue her studies at the Psychiatry Department, Massachusetts Hospital, which has been recognised as the world’s best hospital for 13 consecutive years. Dr Sharifah Elizah, who graduated from Guy’s Hospital, London, is particularly interested in aspects of patients’ healthcare and welfare.

Tourism Ministry promotes Malaysian cuisine
The Tourism Ministry has launched Fabulous Food 1 Malaysia, a tourism campaign to promote Malaysian cuisine worldwide.Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen says it will run from October to December and will become an annual programme focusing on gourmet food and street food.Dr Ng says that tourist arrivals in Malaysia reached 2,030,337 in August – a 10.4 per cent increase compared with the same period last year.

Fiesta Malaysia event set for Melbourne
Malaysian students studying in Australia will stage an event in Melbourne showcasing Malaysia’s cultural heritage. KL to host arts education tour
Kuala Lumpur is one of five Asian cities to host the QS World Arts Tour which will show case regional and global creative, performing arts and design institutions as well as galleries and theatres. Maritime centre wants more government-funded scholarships
Sarawak’s Pelita Maslaut Maritime Training Centre, which trains seafarers, wants the Malaysian government to give more scholarships to students. Managing director Masni Amit said that if more scholarships were available then Malaysia wouldn’t have to rely on foreign sailors from Myanmar, India, Indonesia and the Philippines. “There are many students especially from needy rural families who dream of becoming professional seafarers but they cannot afford the fees and living expenses.
