Malaysia sixth in Asia for corporate social responsibility

Malaysia is sixth among the top 10 Asian countries that are focusing on corporate social responsibility (CSR) according to a survey carried out by CSR Asia. Australia was in first place followed by China and Hong Kong. Malaysia Airlines number 8 in world rankings

Malaysia Airlines is number 8th in the Top Airlines, Worldwide Category in a poll by Smart Travel Asia. The national carrier is tied with Lufthansa in 8th position. “We are delighted to receive the recognition and once again we are among the world’s top 10 best airlines,” Malaysia Airlines managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Azmil Zahruddin said.

Malaysia’s first Harvard scholar takes up place

The first Malaysian to be awarded a scholarship by the University of Harvard in the US, Tunku Dr Sharifah Elizah Cornelia Jamalullail, 29, is undertake a study in psychiatry. The scholarship, under the auspices of The Mahadevan Fellowship, enables Dr Sharifah Elizah to continue her studies at the Psychiatry Department, Massachusetts Hospital, which has been recognised as the world’s best hospital for 13 consecutive years. Dr Sharifah Elizah, who graduated from Guy’s Hospital, London, is particularly interested in aspects of patients’ healthcare and welfare.

Malaysia to build power line to Indonesia

Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia’s biggest energy producer is to build a power line linking the country to Indonesia, its chief executive Che Khalib Mohamad Noh says. The 195 mile long, submarine cable will be operational by 2015. Malaysia already has connections to Thailand, Singapore, Laos and Myanmar.

Malaysia to restore forest for orangutans

The government of eastern Sabah says that it will replant trees in a forest decimated by logging, in a bid to restore the natural habitat of endangered orangutans. The government of eastern Sabah has signed an agreement with the World Wildlife Fund to plant trees covering 2,390 acres over the next five years. The WWF says that orangutans, pygmy elephants, rhinoceroses, sun bears and other animals are at risk because loggers and plantations are taking over their natural habitat.

Malaysia in top 50 for education in UNESCO report

Malaysia has been recognised as among the top countries most successful in providing access to education for all, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in its Education for All Global Monitoring Report 2009 rates Malaysia 45 out of 129 countries. Malaysia holds interest rate at 2.0 percent

Malaysia’s central bank, Bank Negara, has kept its interest rate at 2.0 percent because the global outlook remains uncertain. “As price pressures and inflationary expectations are expected to remain contained going forward, the assessment is that the current monetary policy stance is appropriate and will continue to provide support to economic activity,” the bank said in a statement.
