Malaysia low cost airline to fly to Middle East
Malaysia’s low cost airline AirAsia says it is to start flights to Abu Dhabi in November – its first move into the Middle Eastern market. Abu Dhabi is a potentially lucrative market – it is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates and a high percentage of its population are expatriates who travel frequently, AirAsia’s chief executive Azran Osman-Rani, told reporters. “We believe our low fares will help to stimulate and trigger new travel demand, and will help to boost tourism potential on both ends,” he said.

Chinese businesses, “cautiously optimistic,” says survey
A survey carried out by the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ACCCIM), indicates that the Chinese business community is “cautiously optimistic” about Malaysia’s economic outlook. “Fifty-two percent of respondents surveyed indicated that their local sales are likely to be maintained for the next six months,” Datuk Chua Tia Guan, a spokesman for the ACCCIM, told reporters. Malaysia to build velodrome to prepare for 2012 Olympics
Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Ministry wants to build a velodrome to help cyclists prepare for the London 2012 Olympics. Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek, says, “If it can be ready by the London Olympics of 2012, it will be a source of pride for us and serve as an inspiration to Malaysian cyclists to strive for the country’s first Olympic gold at the London Games.” However the cost and location of the proposed velodrome have yet to be decided. Malaysian group aims to break in Formula 1 Motor racing
A Malaysian group wants to create a Southeast Asian team to break into Formula 1 motor racing by 2016. The Malaysian-based Meritus Racing team is already part of the GP2 Asia series of races which acts as a ‘feeder’ programme for Formula 1. The team’s next goal is to get into GP2 Europe – which is a training ground for Formula 1 drivers and teams – by 2011 and to take a full part in Formula 1, five years later.

Samsung Malaysia to invest RM10 Million in 20 digital centres
Samsung Malaysia Electronics says it will invest RM10 million to open 20 Samsung digital centres across the country by the end of the year. Managing Director Yoon Ki Heung says the digital centres will help the company to build the Samsung Malaysia brand. The centres will sell mobile phones, home appliances and IT products and accessories. The company says it is expecting a monthly turnover of between RM300,000 and RM600,000 from each outlet.

Malaysia wants to increase the number of tourist arrivals from India by 20 percent this year and has launched ‘One Malaysia- Endless Experience’ a marketing campaign which focuses on Malaysia as a value for money destination. Malaysia plans to improve urban transport
Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Najib Razak, has said the government is to improve Kuala Lumpur’s urban transportation with the development of a new integrated mass transit line, running from Damansara to Cheras and from Kelana Jaya to Putra Heights. The plan will end the need for commuters in Kuala Lumpur to walk some distance to change lines.

Malaysia to cut spending to lower budget deficit, says Minister
Malaysia’s Second Finance Minister, Ahmad Husni Hanadziah, told business leaders that the government will cut spending in a bid to lower the budget deficit. The Minister said, “We need to re-strategise to bring the economy back to its growth trajectory by strengthening private investment and consumption as well as diversifying export markets.” He added that next year’s budget, which will be presented in October, will be “very challenging,” but says that Malaysia doesn’t need a third package of stimulus measures because the global economy is recovering.”

Malaysia set for better growth in 2010, says Minister
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Wira Chor Chee Heung says that Malaysia is expected to record better growth in 2010 as prospects for European economies improve. “Since Malaysia’s major exports are to Europe, the recovery there is bound to have a positive impact on our economy. These countries are showing positive signs of economic recovery and this augurs well for Malaysia,” the Minister told reporters. France and Germany are showing signs of growth but Chor added that Malaysia cannot rely on the US and European markets to sustain exports because consumers are still cautious about spending.
