Najib to showcase Putrajaya as centre for admin

Prime Minister Najib told an assembly of public sector workers at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre that he wants Putrajaya to be the model for public administration. “I want Putrajaya to be a fine showcase for the public sector. I don’t want people to belittle Malaysia’s aim of becoming a developed nation. I want them to say that Malaysia is awesome and successful. That’s why we need to improve in all aspects, from our performance and productivity to our diligence,” he said.

Malaysian companies to join Indian business forum

The Malaysia-India Business Council (MIBC) CEO Forum, which will be held in Chennai and Bangalore in India from June 16-19, is expected to attract more than 40 chief executives from the property development, construction-infrastructure and professional services, sectors. Majority of Malaysians confident about finances

A survey carried out by HSBC Insurance reveals that more than half of Malaysians are confident about achieving their long-term financial goals. HSBC also says that close to 70 percent of Malaysians continue to be strong savers despite the current economic climate and 38 percent believe they are financially prepared in case of a crisis. However, close to a quarter said they would use extra savings to cover income gaps.

Sovereign wealth fund identifies investments

Malaysia’s first state-run sovereign wealth fund, Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA), which has RM 1 billion to invest, has identified a number of opportunities in energy, agriculture and tourism. “The key objectives of TIA’s investment strategy are to generate long term sustainable and recurring returns and to ensure the development of long term economic and social programmes for the state,” said TIA chief executive Shahrol Halmi. TIA has its eye on a number of projects both at home and abroad that are likely to have knock-on benefits for the state.

UPM to work closely with Tokyo University

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has signed an agreement with the Ocean Research Institute at the University of Tokyo, to work together on chemistry, physics and biology projects. The Dean of the UPM Science Faculty, Professor Sidek Ab Aziz said the agreement involves the exchange of researchers and information between the two universities over the next five years. The two universities have worked together on a number of different projects in the last decade.  The University of Tokyo is one of the leading research universities in Asia and has 30,000 students.

Malaysia to attend UN meeting on financial crisis

Malaysia is to attend a United Nations conference on the world financial crisis on June 1-3 in New York. The conference will address the impact of the global downturn on development issues and will attempt to find solutions to tackle the deepening crisis.  Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadziah told reporters that “earlier forecasts that the world economy would grow by 0.5 percent by year end will not materialise.”

New JobsMalaysia centres to open

Malaysia is to open 22 JobsMalaysia centres in shopping malls and at bus stations to help find jobs for the unemployed and those laid off due to the global economic crisis. Deputy Human Resource Minister Datuk Maznah Mazlan told reporters that the centres would complement efforts by the 80 Manpower Department offices in the various states and that employers would be able to advertise jobs at the centres.

Malaysians planning for retirement earlier

The global economic downturn is encouraging younger Malaysians to plan for their retirement says a survey from AXA Life Insurance. The company says that Malaysians are willing to plan for their retirement three years earlier at the age of 34 compared with 37 in 2007. “Overall, Malaysians are taking a much more positive attitude towards retirement planning,” AXA’s chief marketing officer, Nicholas Kua, said in a statement. And he added that Malaysians have been shocked by the global economic gloom and are now much more aware of the need to focus on planning for the future.

Malaysia 18th in terms of global competitiveness

Malaysia is ranked 18th in world competitiveness according to the annual World Competitiveness Yearbook. It has risen one place this year, overtaking Ireland which has dropped to 19th place. Trade agreement signed with Qatar

Malaysia has signed a bilateral trade agreement with oil rich Qatar. Last year Qatar accounted for 3.1 percent of Malaysia’s trade in West Asia or RM1.699 million. The aim of the agreement is to promote and diversify trade between the two countries and to establish a joint trade committee to cooperate on trade and investment issues.
